About Kidmodern

The kidmodern collection evolved directly out of Gale's abstract and decorative painting. Shortly before her son was born, Gale painted a canvas especially for him — fish swimming around colorful waves under a big sun. Inspired by this unusually playful painting, Gale slowly began to add more elements from nature to her abstract paintings — leaves, flowers, birds, butterflies and trees. A magical wonderland emerged, animated by vivid color, pattern and design. Kidmodernhas since become an ever growing and evolving collection of artwork.

Artist's Statement

In creating a kidmodern painting, I combine the things that I love — color, pattern, design, and collage. When beginning a piece, I don't always have an end in mind. I let the materials lead the way.

Over time, I have developed a technique of collaging tissue paper with many layers of paint, translucent glazes, and wax. This process allows for unexpected patterns and shapes to emerge from the materials themselves. I build up areas of color, texture, and overlays of cut paper shapes. I look for a rhythm and a conversation between the colors and the patterns, the background and the foreground. At times, paintings are transformed from one idea into something very different. A painting is complete when I create an image that feels fresh and unique and it surprises me.

This process allows me to create from deep in my imagination. My artwork is a personal expression of an animated and vibrant natural world.
